Applications

Case Erecting

Although, there are many possible configurations for this application, this list is the most common equipment arrangement for case erecting:

  • EC series melt tank
  • standard hose
  • low profile gun, NCH 204 R LP, four cartridge gun
  • 90° H200 single orifice nozzles
  • 3-way air solenoid

Case Sealing

This application is very similar to case erecting and can sometimes use the same configuration. In many cases the gun configuration will depend upon the style and manufacturer of the packaging machine.

This application is typically performed with an array of the following equipment:

  • EC series melt tank
  • standard hose
  • either MS NCH 204 R, standard, low profile gun NCH 204 R LP, low profile gun NCH 202R LP
  • either H200 single orifice nozzle or 90° H200 single orifice nozzles
  • 3-way air solenoid

Case Closing

This application, as many others, can feature an array of various applicators depending on the style or type of parent machine. This configuration of equipment is common for most slow to medium speed applications:

  • EC series, D series melt tanks
  • pair of standard hoses
  • pair of MS NCH 201 R, single module guns or other variant
  • 2 sets of H200 single orifice nozzles
  • pair of 3 way solenoids

High Speed Closing

This application requires the use of higher speed valves such as the ME style guns. They provide excellent cut-off at high speeds and can place patterns accurately and without stringing. The MX valve is also an option but must be accompanied with a Valco Pattern controller such as the MCP4 or MCS. Otherwise it will need a Valve Driver version of the MCP4 for the firing of the MX valves.

This application is typically performed with an array of the following equipment:

  • EC series, D series Melt Tanks
  • pair of standard hoses
  • pair of ME NCH 441 R, AO/AC single module guns , MX guns or other variant
  • 2 sets of H200 single orifice nozzles
  • solenoids included with ME style guns, no separate solenoid required

Beverage Packaging

This application is one of the few that always requires washdown equipment. Many customers will not have washdown equipment on the machine from the OEM due to the up-front cost but when line bursts occur and high pressure washdown occurs the rate of failure of non-washdown equipment will be high. These machines typically package cases of soda, beer and other liquid beverages in cans.

This application is typically performed with an array of the following equipment:

  • Large EC series, D series melt tanks
  • up to 4 Washdown Hoses
  • 2 sets of MS 3 cartridge, Washdown indpt air guns, 2 sets of MS 2 cartridge, washdown indpt air guns
  • roughly 6 H200 single orifice nozzles
  • large number of solenoids to meet requirements of applicators used
  • EPC control for pump pressure due to operation at job speeds and full open speeds

Bottle Labelling

SWF Conversion

SWF conversions are very common and when installed properly can dramatically improve output performance. When installing this conversion system it’s important to ensure that the drive wheel pulling the blank through the machine is not worn and doesn’t allow the box to slip through as it comes through the glue station as this will cause issues that cannot be adjusted for within the parameters of the gluing system.

These applications are unique and specific to this style of machine. The SWF conversion is a hot melt system for use on “vertical tray formers.” You could be replacing an SWF glue pot, Star Wheel applicator, TG09 Nordson or 3000 Series Nordson extrusion system. The equipment required for all conversions is slightly different. The most difficult is the StarWheel conversion. The list of parts below should be used for this specific conversion:

  • EC series melt tank
  • 2 Standard Hoses, one 8ft and one 10ft
  • pair of MS Guns, NCH-202 R .88cntrs or NCH-204 R .88-1.5-.88cntrs common air
  • MCP4 Pattern Control Kit with encoder
  • SWF Bracket Package includes gun mounting bars and splash plates
  • nozzle assortment based on number of modules being used

General & universal taper conversion

These conversions are fairly simple to install. The only difficult part of the install is the mounting of the 2012 Assembly into the “U” channel of the machine. It might be necessary to cut a hole through the top of the “U” channel or enlarge an existing hole in order to properly drop the applicator down between the rollers. The bracket package is typically mounted on top of the “U” channel.

These systems are configured very similarly to one another. The type of glue shoe/manifold used along with the mounting bracket kit and possible flap guide are the only variables. The following list of equipment is used recommended:

  • EC series melt tank
  • 8ft standard hose
  • 2012 Manifold/Valve Assembly
  • either a Universal or General Taper shoe/manifold
  • bracket package for either application
  • assortment of nozzles for the selected glue shoe; include blanks if necessary
  • a hot melt system flap guide might be necessary
  • an MCP4 kit if not current glue system

Product assembly

The D4E Melter is perfect for most handgun applications. There is the option of either a 120V or 240V system. There are hose length restrictions with the 120V systems. There are 2 options in regards to handguns. The AD41 is the standard handgun and includes a ball-swivel fluid joint for very ergonomic use as well as a cordset for the electrical connection. The AD31 is another option that provides 360-degree rotation of the handgun in relation to the hose. This handgun does not have an electrical cordset and is “hard wired” to the hose. The AD31 handgun/hose sets are available in pre-assembled kits so that they can be quickly and easily added onto machines. For applications using JOWAT or Polyamide adhesives it’s recommended to use the D series tanks with the high temperature pump. This pump is also capable of high viscosities that sometimes come along with these types of adhesives.

This application can take on many various forms. For simple applications involving EVA or PSA the following systems should be used:

  • D4E Handgun/Unit Kits
  • D10 Melt Tank with AD41 handgun and hose, 230VAC
